Adventure & Travel (you're here already, dummy)

You can vote for a revised list of the 7 Wonders of the world since only one from the original list still exists (the Great Pyramid in Egypt). I have a bias, of course, to the more exotic places in the world...like Easter Island and its statues. I've never been there, nor have most people, but to me it is incredible that such a small island population, isolated from the rest of the world could and would construct such things. I also like both Macchu Pichu and Chichen Itza. I've been to both and my new venture, Casa Hamaca, is located less than 25 miles from Chichen Itza. Go here to cast your vote. It's free but they will capture your personal information for marketing purposes. I'm trying to learn how to do that so that I can capture your information. They will announce the results on 07.07.07...cute!

If you like to build things, take a look at these two sites for new possibilities in your life: Dominos...build them up and then knock them down.

And roofs...build them up and hope the next hurricane won't knock them down.

Let's Go for a Row!..,.across the Atlantic...and let's do it during Hurricane season

...and while we're at it, let's race some other people across....this sounds like fun!

Atlantic Rowing Race 2001-2002
I have a friend who is really crazy. I mean serious crazy! He and another guy are training for a rowing race that will start in October of 2001 and take at least 55 days (they think). The race starts in the Canary Islands off the coast of North Africa and ends on the island of Barbados off the coast of South America. This race is held every couple of years whenever enough people get day passes from the funny farm to get a race together. John Zeigler (my friend) & Tom Mailhot comprise the only USA entry in this race (go figure). They've got a nice web site that explains this whole thing and makes it sound almost sane. They've also got some nice tee-shirts for sale...buy one ...they need all the support they can get 'cause they've had to raise all the money for this thing all by themselves. http://www.usrowboys.com/ Use Back Button to Return Here

Nov. 18, 2001

The first finisher has arrived on Barbados on or about the 16th or 17 of November, 2001. John and Tom are currently in tenth place and are expected to land on Barbados the first week of December.

John

John sent us his thoughts on life... "Tough Life"
The most unfair thing about life is the way it ends.
I mean, life is tough. It takes up a lot of your time.
What do you get at the end of it? A death.
What's that, a bonus?
I think the life cycle is all backwards.
You should die first, get it out of the way.
Then you live in an old age home.
You get kicked out when you're too young,
you get a gold watch, you go to work.
You work forty years until you're young
enough to enjoy your retirement.
You do drugs, alcohol, you party,
you get ready for high school.
You go to grade school,
you become a kid, you play,
you have no responsibilities,
you become a little baby,
you go back into the womb,
you spend your last nine months floating...
you finish off as an orgasm."
...makes me wonder how John intends to finish the race.
Caroline Brewer in the Bergen Record (Northern New Jersey) wrote a very nice feature on John and the race on Oct. 1, 2000. Click here to read it.

Just after Caroline's article ran she received this e-mail and passed it along.

"BUENOS DAYUS CAROLINE...

I enjoyed your article on the guys that are going to row the Atlantic. Now that's an interesting REAL survivor effort....not like the trash being fed the TV public with that stupid "survivors on island with Holliday Inn, newscrew, evac chopper, etc."What a shame the this guys are having such difficulties finding funding when a fake survivor walksoff with $1.0 million.
Pace e Salute...JP

PORKQUOTE: Who said life had to be fair?"

Write John at zsons@carroll.com if you can help.

Track John and Tom in real time and chart their progress for the duration of the race.

Montana Forest Fire

"This awesome picture was taken in the Bitterroot National Forest in Montana on August 6, 2000 by a fire behavior analyst from Fairbanks,Alaska by the name of John McColgan with a Digital camera. Since he was working while he took the picture, he cannot sell or profit from it so he should at least be recognized as the photographer of this once in a lifetime shot. THIS PICTURE IS INCREDIBLE!"

Doug Mensing of Minneapolis sent me this photo with the above caption. Thanks Doug. The shot is awesome!
