| I once saw Dalí in person. A friend and I were eating lunch in the bar section of a small restaurant on east 56th Street in New York City. Dalí was seated alone in a banquette just across from us. He was wearing a huge hairy coat draped over his shoulders and was recognized by us firstly because of his famous mustache. The matre d' suddenly appeared, bent over to whisper in Dalí's ear, walked away and reappeared with another gentleman. The matre d' introduced the two men and the second man joined Dalí at his table where they engaged in an animated conversation. When the second man turned around we recognized him as Richard Burton, the actor. I can't recall the year this took place, sometime in the 1970s, I believe, but Burton was on Broadway at the time in Equis. Perhaps someone remembers. |
