The ladies below (Emily on the left and Laura on the right) both teach English to Spanish-speaking island residents and teach Spanish to North Americans, Europeans and Asian. |

The following photos are of 12 barracuda we took one morning. My friend used a pole while I fished island-style...using hand line. We caught identical amounts and sizes of fish, but I bet I had more fun. Then we ate two of the fish that day, barbecued for us by another friend and had the remainder the following day as ceviche. |

The following photos are from the Feast of the Virgin (Guadalupe) in December. The statue of the Virgin is carried from the church to the docks where it is taken out near the small harbor lighthouse. There is a small sunken cross there. The large boat carrying the Virgin is followed by almost every boat on the island...and as many people that can fit in the boats. Then the Virgin is paraded through the streets back to the church on the main square. |

Value for the Money:
You can't easily do the island on $5 per day, but you can do very well at $50 per. An if you stay at places like the Hotel Isleño and eat at places like Carmelita's*, you should be able to easily get by for less than $30 per night. A solid value in either case.
2006 Note: Carmelita's is closed. But there are other low cost places with very good food.
|
Recommendation:
A little off-beat & a little bit time-warp. No glitz or neon. Lots of nice people, nice beaches, nice fishing, nice eating. But not for everyone!
2006 Note: Feels like it is getting crowded...maybe time to head to Isla Holbox.

Would I go again?
And again and again and again! You bet I would!
